How to deal with a coworker who is out to get you?

Seven things that you can do to deal with the co-worker who is out to get you.

  1. Be calm about it
  2. Keep your thoughts to yourself.
  3. Avoid the coworker outside the corporate work area
  4. Take it to the HR
  5. Keep a record of things that happen
  6. Don’t let it get your work
  7. Don’t be paranoid.

Be calm about it; when you find out that your colleague has reported you or accused you of doing something to your boss, one of the best things to do is to be calm about it. Getting all defensive and hysterical will not help in getting the issue solved rather, you are giving your boss something to suspect and satisfying the desires of the colleague who is out to get you.

Keep your thoughts to yourself; it is normal to feel worried when you have a colleague who is out to get you however you must be careful of what you say and to who you say it. You might have friends in the office who you think got your back but you have to be careful in what you say because most of them might not be your friends as you think they are. So this is why you mustn’t say anything at all. If you feel a need to rant, make sure you get home before you rant. If you feel the need to talk to someone, getting a therapist will be the best option for you or you can also talk to a family member who you know will understand you and is most likely to support you.

Avoid the coworker; a co-worker who is out to get you is dangerous but what is more dangerous is when you associate yourself with such a person. They might be trying to act all nice and acting like they have your best interest at heart but once you know that he or she is out to get you, it is best that outside the office you avoid them. When they try to invite you for things like a date, you should turn them down because they might be looking for something with which they can get you into trouble. They might also be trying to dig up things about you and if you’re not careful, you are going to fall prey to them.

Take it to the HR; this could go both ways. You might have issues with an higher up, in this situation do not expect the HR to back you up. The HR is more likely to back up the employer than to support you.

However, if you are dealing with a higher-up, before reporting your case make sure you have solid evidence so that the situation does not become worse. It is better if you have a problem with an equal co-worker, this gives you an even playing field so when you are reporting, make sure you also have your evidence, this makes it easy for them to investigate and vindicate you.

Keep a record of things; keeping a record of things that happen is not necessarily because you want to accuse them or report them to HR but rather because your coworker is likely to report you and if they do, they are likely to bring forward evidence that might indict you. So keeping a record of things will help so that you can vindicate yourself and present evidence when you are trying to defend yourself.

Don’t be paranoid, be focused on work; when you find out that a co-worker is out to get you, the worst thing you can do to yourself is to be paranoid of others on your team or any other co-worker. This is very likely to ruin the good relationship that you have so the best thing to do is to be calm about it and avoid paranoia. Most importantly, be more focused on work and focus on performing better. This will help take your mind off things.
